Announcements

Joe is continuing to get faculty comments and questions about the Gen Ed meetings which will begin on Feb. 16 in Holy Cross Hall.

The committee will be meeting with the students on Mon., Feb. 19. Joe will talk with Maggie Siefert to get the specifics of when and where.

The Board of Trustees will be meeting on Feb. 22, and the general education presentation to the Education Committee of the Board will begin at 8:30. Joe will first update the Board about the Faculty Development Day held on Jan. 12, then the Gen Ed Committee will present more information. Joe will introduce the comments, Patti will give information about the gen ed models that were examined, Chris will give a summary of the categories with which we are now working, and Joe will finish the presentation.

Monday, Feb. 26 will be our next Gen Ed lunch. We will be updating faculty as to where we are after 2 faculty sessions where we have presented possible Gen Ed models. We decided it needs to be more of an open discussion rather than table groups, and we need to emphasize our progress but that we have not made irrevocable decisions.

General Education Structure Models

Each committee member who prepared a Gen Ed document briefly presented their work.
All models had these classes in common: PHIL 110, RLST 101, 1 fine art/art criticism, 1 lab science, 1 social science, 2 foreign language, 1 math. All models also included: experiential/service learning, interdisciplinary/intercultural experience, oral proficiency, and writing proficiency. In addition, all models included a life skills component that utilizes the professional programs.

We will meet on Tuesday (2/13/07) to finalize what we will be presenting to faculty. It looks like we will have 3 or 4 models.

As we present these models and think about the specifics, we need to look honestly at what we know we can do such as the # of sections needed if we require tandems or 1st year seminars. If tandems are required of all students, we might decide to always pair either PHIL 110 or RLST 101 with every tandem.
