Present: Chris Cobb, Janet Fore, Kitty Green, Joe Incandela, Nancy Nekvasil, Daniel Party, Charlie Peltier
Next meeting of committee:
Friday, March 9, 2:00-3:00 (President’s Conference Room)
Joe’s report on Miami Conference:
1. Listening to other schools’ experiences Joe felt like we are on the right track regarding, particularly regarding open communication with faculty and students.
2. It took roughly 5 years to several schools to reform GenEd!
How to respond to blog comments
We agreed that it is important to respond. We will respond as individuals with a disclaimer that explains that we are responding as such and not as a group.
Meeting with President Mooney
We would like to ask her, among other things, about administrative backing to the GenEd reform. The committee will meet with her on May 4th from 2-4 pm.
Where to go next?
We agreed to eliminate model D because it has received mostly negative criticism, and very little support. From now on we will present only the first three models to faculty. Members will revise models prior to our next meetings with faculty.
We need to address the issues of assessment and resources that the implementation of each model would require. Although at this point we can only discuss this broadly, we need to be prepared to answer questions about these issues at future meetings with groups of faculty.
Discussion about assessment ensued. The W program was considered as a possible model for GenEd assessment. We need to consider the cost involved in assessment as well. Chris suggested the option of having remunerated activities before or after the semester.
