September 5, 2008 Ad Hoc Committee Meeting

Present
:
Chris Cobb, Janet Fore, Joe Incandela, Nancy Nekvasil, Charlie Peltier, Patti Sayre

  1. Joe passed out a list of available times for future meetings of Gen Ed committee this term. We should contact him if there are times on here that will not work for any of us.

  2. Joe reported on a recent meeting with the dean, who encouraged us to meet with departments this term, in groups of departments. Also present, was Jessica Ickes, director of assessment who suggested that (1) there need to be fewer sub-outcomes (three at most under each of the six major heads) and (2) the matrix could be reworked so that the course requirements come under the list of outcomes, making the outcomes clearly that which is driving the courses (the alternative matrix she devised, however, may be a bit too “list-ish” in nature).

  3. Notes from the table discussions, collated by Joe, will be put on the blog.

  4. Some of the past Design Team Co-Chairs have expressed willingness to come together to do further work with us, functioning as a “first audience” for the Gen Ed committee’s work this semester. Or, they could be brought in for the very special task of trying to determine just how tight the coupling should be between disciplines/departments and outcomes, and how uniform we need to make that coupling across the college.

  5. What to do next?

    • One possibility: Work on design, editing sub-outcomes, and talking with departments all needs to happen simultaneously: so we hear from departments, we edit and design based on what we hear, and eventually take this all back to the faculty.

    • Another possibility: Go back to main outcomes, and try to get the faculty to think outside of what they have always done in Gen Ed, and thinking about what they could do that fits an outcome.

    • Another possibility: Go to departments with a focus on first year seminar series (critical thinking-W courses linked in some ways) and not try to do everything. (Or, spend part of the time discussing this, and have open discussion on other things as well.)

We will meet at 3:00 on Monday to continue this discussion.
