September 7, 2007 Ad Hoc Committee Meeting

Present
:
Chris Cobb, Kitty Green, Joe Incandela, Nancy Nekvasil, Charlie Peltier, Patti Sayre

1. Joe announced that there will be another AAC & U conference in Washington, D.C., Jan 23-26; those interested in attending can talk to him.

2. Joe announced that the Dean is asking the Assessment Committee to review the outcomes of the models, with the models then by revised by the Ad Hoc Gen Ed committee accordingly. As such a review, if is carefully conceived, is unlikely to reach us before the “expression of preference” vote, it may be a good idea for the Assessment Committee to wait until after the vote to begin their work. This has the advantage of allowing the Assessment Committee to be more focused in their work. The results of the review will then be integrated into the Design process in whatever ways seem most appropriate as that process unfolds.

3. The survey presentation was reviewed, with editing of the opening paragraphs to (1) move the point that this is a vote on a working document with which to move forward, not a vote on a new gen ed curriculum, to the beginning of the first paragraph, and (2) to change some of the language of preference to leave from for preferences that arise not only from comparisons of the 2 models, but comparisons of these models with other general education ideas faculty might have. In addition, it was agreed to leave in items requesting demographic information and to add a comment box (which may turn out useful if there is a split in the faculty and we need to see where the disagreements lie and among what groups).

4. Timing issues were discussed: the survey will be available to faculty starting Monday, September 17, and will remain available until the following Monday. A notice of availablility will be sent out on the 17th.

5. If a speaker/consultant is brought in it will not be to consult with design teams, but to give a talk to the faculty and, perhaps, to consult with the Ad Hoc Committee.

6. The next committee meeting will be Monday, September 17, from 2-3, the main business being planning for the Gen Ed Lunch on the 26th.
