March 26, 2009 Ad Hoc Committee Meeting

- Updates: Next meetings will be Thurs, April 2; Tues, April 7; Tues, April 15; Next Gen Ed lunch is April 15.
- To-Do list – There was general agreement that the list is accurate and correct but not necessarily in chronological order.
- Since there will be three of the group on sabbatical next year for a semester or a full year, we need to find short term replacements for at least two. Joe met with Patricia and Marc B. who both supported either one elected and one appointed or both appointed. We recommended one from the natural sciences and one from social sciences, from departments not previously represented, preferably senior and with experience with governance issues or previous general education discussions. Patricia feels it is time to go forward with the General Education Governance or Implementation committee. Whether it is the committee that will work out how the governance works or begins looking at proposed classes is not clear. The group discussed a number of names with a short list for Joe to begin calling to invite for appointments.
- Chris commented about his continued reflection on the definition of “the crossing” not being a center/core but rather a place of integration. He also supports making a link between the critical thinking and the W program. Perhaps a required inter-disciplinary course could then be added to the center along with any other forms of curricular integration we put forward.
- Jessica shared her discussion with Patricia about the Assessment Committee working in tandem as a full resource to the Gen Ed Committee in helping to develop tools such as rubrics for assessment components.
- Janet will send out to the Committee information Catherine P. and she have found on definitions of Media Literacy.
