April 2, 2009 Ad Hoc Committee Meeting

- Joe spoke briefly at the last Diversity lunch, providing a general introduction to the design for the new gen ed program; follow-up discussion dealt with unanswered questions still looming about LO3, and still unresolved issues left from the work of Design Team 1 (of particular concern were sequencing and developmental issues).
- The search for two new committee members to fill slots created by sabbatical leaves continues. The Committee has identified as priorities finding replacements who could speak to curricular issues pertaining to the social and natural sciences.

- Planning for Gen Ed Lunch (April 15):
The lunch will focus on procedural and governance issues; among matters to be addressed are:- how the ad hoc committee plans to proceed:
- Summer: pin down crossings and governance
- Fall: pin down “arms”
- Spring: move final draft through appropriate approval processes
- Summer: pin down crossings and governance
- open discussion of concerns about governance and the role and set-up of the new gen-ed committee (possibilities: invite Patricia to address faculty on this subject; invite former/current chairs of curriculum committee, on which this new committee will be modeled, to speak on what works and what doesn’t)
- make clear that start-up work of the committee will be substantial, as all gen ed courses must be approved by the committee, using criteria approved by the faculty at large (gen ed decisions will not be made by departments)

Briefly considered the question of whether these learning outcomes can all be met in the major, or whether it is part of the learning outcome that we want students to gain multiple perspectives on such things as social responsibility, intercultural competence, etc.
