November 18, 2009, Ad Hoc Committee Meeting
Present: Chris Cobb, Janet Fore, Joe Incandela, Michael Kramer, Don Paetkau, Charlie Peltier, Laurel Thomas

The minutes from the November 11 meeting were approved.
A committee has been formed by the Dean to focus on ways to incorporate the recognition of women’s voices into the general education program. Joe informed the committee that he has corresponded with some members of the Women’s Studies Committee on this issue. One idea that has been suggested is having required outcome dealing with women’s voices in all arms of the cross. There has been discussion of supplementing the LO3 outcomes with issues specifically focused on women’s voices and issues, and with incorporation of these concerns in the area of integration of learning. The current phrasing of the outcomes used by the Women’s Studies committee does not seem to fit well with the LO3 outcomes as stated so far. More work is needed here.
The committee discussing governance structures has met and is meeting – Joe still hopes to have a report for the Faculty Assembly meeting on December 2.
Joe handed out a a summary of student participation in tandems, courses with Interdisciplinary-specific numbers (WOST, JUST, ICS) and courses(in other departments) that are approved as part of interdisciplinary minors. These figures will be available for the General Education lunch on November 23.
The main work for the day was in planning the General Education lunch for November 23, to focus on integration of learning. Some questions to be addressed are:
Is the program adequate and manageable?
How is synthesis to be addressed or achieved? – Is enrollment in an interdisciplinary course sufficient as evidence?
