September 22, 2009, Ad Hoc Committee Meeting

Present: Chris Cobb, Janet Fore, Kitty Green, Joe Incandela, Michael Kramer, Nancy Nekvasil, Don Paetkau, Charlie Peltier, Laurel Thomas

Joe announced that this is the 100th meeting of the Ad Hoc Gen Ed committee excluding day-long meetings and Gen Ed lunches.

Thank you to those who contributed to the skills outcomes via e-mail since our last meeting.

The Gen Ed lunch will be in Stapleton, Wednesday, Sept. 23 at noon. Joe will begin the lunch with some brief instructions. We will disperse ourselves among the tables and take notes. On the table will be the cross design for Gen Ed, instructions of what we are asking people to do, and one or two copies of the slot-based outcomes. We will ask participants to look at the skills outcomes and send any suggestions for word changes to the committee through the blog/wiki.

We want participants to give feedback about whether skills should have assigned slots, should be assigned a place in the major, will occur naturally in special courses that handle that skill, or be free-floating. We talked about ways to organize the questions to get the information we need. We decided that, for the lunch, participants will be asked: 1) what a course would need to do to claim that a skills outcome was covered in that course; 2) where they see the various skills outcomes fitting into the current Gen Ed structure; and 3) if they believe the skills should be specifically taught or if it is sufficient to have experiences in courses where students use the skill.

We then worked on the outcome for “interpersonal skills” and came up with the following:

A Saint Mary’s student collaborates effectively and engages in respectful dialogue on issues of substance in a variety of situations.
