March 19, 2010, Ad Hoc Committee Meeting

- The committee briefly discussed plans for presenting the proposed General Education program to the Alumnae Board on Saturday, March 20. It was agreed that Patricia, Joe, Chris, and Michael would make the presentation.
- Dean Fleming informed the committee members that they would be participating in the presentation of the program to the Board of Trustees. The Board’s consideration of the proposal is currently scheduled for 10:00 am on Friday, April 23.
- Dean Fleming explained the procedural role of the ad-hoc General Education Committee at this point in the reform process. Because the reform proposal has now been taken up by the Academic Affairs Council, that body now has authority to consider or make changes to the document defining the program. The ad-hoc committee may be called upon to make suggestions in an advisory capacity to the Academic Affairs Council or its members, but the ad-hoc committee no longer should initiate or make changes to the document on its own authority. In that respect, the ad-hoc committee’s work is complete.
- In light of the way the approval process has moved forward, the committee discussed the question of whether an additional informational session concerning the proposal should be scheduled with the faculty. The committee suggested that such a meeting was unlikely to be helpful at this juncture of the process, as most faculty concerns were related to issues of implementation that the ad-hoc committee had no standing to address. The committee suggested instead that the appropriate group to lead the next informational session with faculty would be the implementation team, which might sponsor such a meeting after the program had been approved by the Board.
- The committee reviewed the issued raised by the faculty in response to President Mooney’s presentation of the proposed General Education program to the Faculty Assembly on Wednesday, March 17. Most of the discussion focused on concerns raised with respect to the Women’s Voices requirement. The committee concluded that the requirement was appropriate to the goal of having Women’s Voices diffused throughout the curriculum and that implementation of the requirement as written would probably be feasible. The committee therefore did not recommend any change in this requirement to the Academic Affairs Council.
- The committee briefly reviewed a preliminary draft of an advising worksheet for the proposed program. The discussion indicated that the committee saw it as a basically functional document, but the sentiment was strongly expressed that the worksheet should always be paired with a succinct presentation of the purpose of the General Education program.
