December 2, 2009, Ad Hoc Committee Meeting

Present: Chris Cobb, Janet Fore, Kitty Green, Joe Incandela, Michael Kramer, Nancy Nekvasil, Don Paetkau

Guest: Jessica Ickes

Minutes of Nov. 18, 2009 were approved as written.

Joe distributed the learning outcomes developed by the Women’s Voices committee.

A Gen Ed governance update was presented at Faculty Assembly today and everything appears to be on track. This governance update may be placed on the Academic Affairs meeting agenda soon.

We talked briefly about the Gen Ed and the BFA as prompted by a document created by Julie Tourtilotte. We will be discussing this more with the idea that the Gen Ed should be a common experience for all students as much as will be possible regardless of degree program.

The overall consensus from the Gen Ed lunch about synthesis and integration was that interdisciplinary courses did not guarantee integration and a course-based synthesis plan was not the answer for how we can accomplish this in our curriculum. We spent the remainder of our time talking about integration as an active process, integration via experiences such as internships, and the use of e-portfolios to move toward synthesis and integration. We decided that in order for e-portfolios to work for promoting synthesis and integration among our students, changes would have to be made in how the e-portfolios are currently being used, and incentives would have to be developed to encourage students to use the e-portfolio as it is envisioned.
