April 14, 2009 Ad Hoc Committee Meeting
Present: Chris Cobb, Janet Fore, Joe Incandela, Nancy Nekvasil, Daniel Party, Charlie Peltier, Patti Sayre

Minutes from April 7, were approved as amended.
Good news on Committee membership – Michael Kramer and Don Paetkau will join us as “sabbatical replacements” for next year. Don will join us in the Fall and Michael may also.
Experiential learning (EL) – A committee is being formed to define/facilitate/coordinate EL on campus. Patricia Fleming, Sister Rose Anne Schultz, Karen Johnson, will appoint members to centralize the discussions. They will begin meeting possibly as early as summer.
Gen Ed lunch, Wednesday, April 15 – Patricia will talk 10-15 minutes to lay out the parameters of governance of Gen Ed program and leave the rest of the time for “open mic.” Gen Ed Cte should sit up front and help with responses to questions.

LO3 discussion continued from last meeting.
If parts of LO3 are assigned to specific required courses, it limits innovation.
One way to mitigate is to have the LO’s fulfilled in the major. If this does, it simplifies for the student in majors that are very “full.” There were concerns about tracking to be sure enough “labeled” courses are offered. SR, IC, GA.
Are there natural fits between specific courses and parts of LO3?
How many “experiences” (as opposed to courses) and should they be linked to any particular outcomes? Experiences are more of a pedagogy and also a mode of integration.
Currently, how are experiential learning courses/experiences, independent studies and internships tracked and “credited” now? Variously within different departments.
Next time: See how LO3 sub-outcomes might help us see more clearly about experiential learning and how to get more specific about:
