July 8, 2009 Ad Hoc Committee Meeting
Present: Chris Cobb, Patricia Fleming, Janet Fore, Kitty Green, Joe Incandela, Michael Kramer, Charlie Peltier, Nancy Nekvasil

1. Minutes were approved as amended with changing the wording on the 3rd item to “It was decided that the General Education outcome will determine where the course is placed based on the current outcomes of that course.”
2. The retreat will be July 29th starting at 9 am. The place is yet to be determined.
3. Joe shared rubrics from AAC&U regarding civic responsibility, global awareness, intercultural competence, etc. Jessica added that these rubrics were valid based on considerable field testing.
4. We reviewed the LO3 requirements for General Education—two of the 6 requirements must include an experiential component and up to 2 of these can be met via Science For The Citizen and the Modern Language requirement. Up to 2 courses in the major can be used to meet the LO3 requirement.
LO3 outcomes are:
The committee believes that when a guide is prepared for course submissions that meet LO3 outcomes, a course must meet the 3 outcomes to the degree that is functionally similar to the examples or are a plausible extension of the examples.
5. Homework for the retreat is to become familiar with the materials distributed at today’s meeting.

- She identifies human needs of individuals situated within the context of culture and environment.
- She analyzes and evaluates the relationship of rights & duties to human needs.

- A Saint Mary’s student will be able to respond as an agent of change. For example,
- She can explain strategies for constructive action in pursuit of social & economic justice.
- Based on knowledge of strategies for constructive actions, the student advocates for social & economic justice or intervenes on behalf of vulnerable or oppressed people.
- She can explain strategies for constructive action in pursuit of social & economic justice.
