Guest: Jessica Ickes
Guest: Jessica Ickes
- Minutes were approved for April 23, 2009 as corrected.
- Joe updated us in the Internationalization efforts after a conversation with Tom Fogle. He also relayed information about the most recent Academic Affairs Committee meeting relative to a governance structure for General Education. Joe and Renee Kingcaid, Chair of the Curriculum Committee, are to form a group to work on a proposal which will: a) define the role of the Gen Ed Curriculum Committee in implementing, revising, and supervising the Gen Ed curriculum (which includes assessment), b) define who would be part of the Gen Ed Curriculum Committee and how they would be selected, and c) define how the work of the Gen Ed Curriculum Committee relates to that of the College’s Curriculum Committee.
- Our next meeting is scheduled for May 8 at 2pm in the Library. Everyone is to send Celia the times you expect to be in town and available for the work in the summer.
- Joe asked for reactions from the last Gen Ed meeting. Most felt progress had been made toward structural solutions of incorporating LO3 outcomes into the Gen Ed, but they also felt we still need discussion related to experiential learning. Discussion continued and included the need to always think about flexibility and user-friendliness relative to advising. The following is the current model we are using to discuss placement of LO3 outcomes and experiential learning.
Area
Unit 1
Unit 2
Social Responsibility (SR)
Natural Sciences
(experiential learning)
Intercultural Competence (IC)
Modern Languages
(experiential learning)
Global Awareness (GA)
At the conclusion of our discussion, we tentatively decided the following:
up to 2 units can be met by non-classroom experiences and at least 2 units must include experiential learning.
