September 8, 2009 Ad Hoc Committee Meeting
Present: Chris Cobb, Janet Fore, Kitty Green, Joe Incandela, Michael Kramer, Don Paetkau, Charlie Peltier, Nancy Nekvasil, Laurel Thomas
Minutes approved with revisions
Joe called attention to some material about learning outcomes from Jessica. Also, Joe relayed Jessica’s recommendation that the committee strive for brevity with the skills outcomes and not feel obligated to write three outcomes for each skill, as we have with other outcome areas.
Joe conveyed concerns by other individuals that our learning outcomes come across as guarantees or merely descriptive of the current SMC student. The committee started a discussion about various ways to articulate the outcomes to make them appear more prescriptive (“A SMC student should be able to,” “A SMC student will be able to,” “A SMC graduate will be able to,” etc.
The committee drafted the following skills outcomes:

- Critical Thinking - “A Saint Mary’s student employs various aspects of critical thinking--interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference, explanation, and self-regulation--in her intellectual work.
- Careful Reading/Textual Interpretation - “A Saint Mary’s student infers relevant meanings from the content and formal features of complex texts and artifacts and from their relationship to their cultural contexts.”
- Evaluation of Data - “A Saint Mary’s student assesses the reliability and validity of data--quantitative and qualitative--and analyzes whether they appropriately address a particular claim.”
