Joe announced that he attended two meetings with students since our last meeting – Board of Governance (BOG) and Student Academic Council (SAC). Basically Joe presented information to the students about where things stand at this point in our work with gen ed and then answered questions from the students.

Joe has been in contact with Scott Evenbeck. He is willing to come talk about learning goals and outcomes as well as learning communities. We discussed when he might come and decided maybe he should talk with our committee soon and then talk to faculty in January for faculty development day. We also might include the Assessment Committee in our meeting with Scott.

We discussed meeting times for the future. For now, we will meet this Friday, Oct. 12, from 2-3pm. The next Gen Ed lunch is currently scheduled for Oct. 31, so if we do not cancel that lunch, we will need to meet the Monday before that day which is Oct. 29. We decided to meet at 4:15 on that day, and we might arrange a meeting for during fall break.

We spent the remainder of the time discussing how to proceed with our work. Charlie circulated a plan for clarifying learning goals in three rounds of feedback from faculty. Some felt this approach was taking us backward, so it was suggested that we, as a committee, work on page one of the models, get to one working document, and then take that to faculty. A third approach would be to go ahead with design teams who would then rewrite page one of the models. It was recognized that we may not have everything in the current list of learning goals, so we need to first check and make sure we are not leaving things out based on other information we have gathered that we have not yet used.

We decided to look at the faculty development day documents and the survey result comments and come to the next meeting ready to discuss what things might be missing from our learning goal/outcome list. This will be our first step, and we will then decide what process to use as we proceed with our work.
