November 26, 2007 Ad Hoc Committee Meeting
Present: Chris Cobb, Janet Fore, Joe Incandela, Nancy Nekvasil, Patti Sayre
- The next meeting (debriefing from the Gen Ed Lunch, planning for Scott Evenbeck visit) will take place Monday, December 3, 4:15.
- There was discussion regarding the Gen Ed Lunch set-up and how to most profitably proceed. It was suggested that we go through each of the major outcomes once without discussion and simply poll, using the following options: approve as written, approve with edits, neutral, disapprove without significant revision, categorically disapprove. Then, we can go back and discuss the ones that seem most problematic.
- The remainder of the meeting (before the note-taker left) was devoted to a discussion of the document that will be presented at the Gen Ed Lunch. It was decided to stick with our original intention of weaving Catholicity and gender throughout, rather than establishing separate outcomes. However, to each of the three major outcomes an introductory sentence preceding the two bulleted items was added to (1) link the value of knowledge and integration with the Catholic tradition’s respect for knowledge for its own sake and its commitment to a vision whereby knowledge exhibits some form of connectivity and coherence; (2) link the importance of critical and communicative skills to the value we place on women’s voices and their distinctive contributions to intellectual discussion; and (3) link our being both a Catholic and a woman’s college with the importance we place on compassionate action in the world.
