November 2, 2007 Ad Hoc Committee Meeting

Present
:
Chris Cobb, Kitty Green, Joe Incandela, Daniel Party, Charlie Peltier, Patti Sayre

Next meeting: Monday, November 12, 4:15 pm.

Minutes from 10/31 were approved with a couple of corrections.

Joe’s announcements:

  1. Patricia Fleming supports our plan of presenting a document to Faculty Assembly in late Fall 07 or early Spring 08. She also encouraged us to include the Women’s education component of SMC into the GenEd Outcomes/Goals.
  2. We will try to get Scott Evenbeck to meet with the committee on Thursday, December 13 (Study Day). We brainstormed topics we could ask him to present to us on that day.

The core of the meeting was spent discussing and editing the working document of Purpose/Goals/Outcomes.

Women’s education: we looked for ways we could include this into Outcomes. It’s already in the Purpose section, but not on Outcomes. An ideal would be to have it transpire through the three outcomes items. One option would be to include gender (and catholicity) as examples of perspectives students will be exposed to (under cognitive skills).

We discussed the distinction between our outcome of “social responsibility” and the Harvard one of “civic responsibility.” We are aware of the distinction and at this point we prefer “social responsibility.”

Joe shared a conversation he had with Julie Storme: for faculty involved with Intercultural Studies and the Diversity initiative, the concepts of “power” and “privilege” seem more appropriate today than “diversity.” We considered the possibility of incorporating the suggestion into the working document.
Joe mentioned that it would be important to mention the “co-curricular” aspect of the GenEd program in the working document.

Kitty will type the changes we made to the working document and submit them over email to the group.
